Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation (VOM)
Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation or VOM is a chiropractic healing technique used for dogs, cats, and other animals which is uniquely safe and gentle, while also effective.
VOM is useful in treating a wide variety of diseases and conditions including mobility issues that involve lameness, hip dysplasia, intervertebral disc disease, Wobblers’ disease, and more.
This chiropractic technique is also useful in addressing urinary and fecal incontinence, digestive disorders, endocrine diseases, nervous system issues and immune system function, among others.
VOM chiropractic care is similar to classic chiropractic in that both modalities seek to restore appropriate body function through the reduction of spinal and joint subluxations.
Spinal and joint locations that are out of alignment are called subluxations, and these misalignments allow areas of the nervous system to fall out of communication. The realignment of these subluxation spots repairs the nerve pathway communications, supporting the body’s capability to heal and optimize its mobility and general function.
VOM differs from classic chiropractic care mainly in the aspect that VOM is performed with the use of a handheld small device called an “activator” (ie spinal accelerometer).
Many human chiropractors use this same activator tool for performing adjustments on adults and infants, in a way that applies a gentle technique that is effective to support alignment correction without the use of the classic type of manual force adjustments.
A unique benefit of VOM technology is also the safety of the technique. The activator tool provides an adequate amount of force to the joint which is needed to accomplish the fixation without inducing a lot of excess motion.
The activator device provides a low force, yet very precise, adjustment. It does this by trading motion for speed. For example, the fastest manual adjustment (via use of the practitioner’s hands) takes 80 milliseconds. Comparatively, the device activates 2-4 times faster, which means the fixation (within the spine or joint) can be achieved with less force.

Furthermore, the speed and precision of the activator device provide an accurate
adjustment regardless of the patient’s position (ie. standing, sitting, lying down) and regardless of their cooperation with being relaxed or still.
This makes the VOM technique a great option for pets, in that it is safe and works well even if they are moving or wiggling.
VOM combines well with acupuncture, massage and laser treatments, and therefore these types of treatment modalities are commonly used together to achieve maximum benefits.
